THE WHITE HOUSE
WASHINGTONSeptember 28, 1992
I am pleased to send greetings to the American members of the Baha'i Community and to the millions of Baha'is around the world as you mark the 100th anniversary of the passing of Baha'u'llah, the prophet-founder of your faith.
As many of you gather in New York for your World Congress or meet in other places for joyful celebration, I know that you are mindful of fellow believers who are being denied the religious freedom and tolerance that are central to Baha'i teachings. In numerous statements and congressional resolutions, the United States has repeatedly expressed the hope that Baha'is in Iran, the birthplace of your faith, will be permitted to practice their religion, as guaranteed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
Baha'i teachings on religious tolerance, the unity of mankind, the elimination of prejudice, equality of the sexes, and universal peace embody principles that all people of good will admire and support. As you salute the life and writings of Baha'u'llah, I join with you in praying that we may see the realization of these fundamental principles in every land.
You have my best wishes for a meaningful celebration.
(Signed, George Bush)
